Dev Log#2
Dev Log #2!
Welcome to the second Development Log for running home! I am pleased to announce that the game is no longer a prototype and I will be hopefully developing the game to a full release (which will hopefully include multiplayer gameplay).
New collectables!
I have added two new collectables to the game. This includes a glowing Cherry which as the name suggests, will glow. There is one right at the start of the testing level and it simply gives you two cherries. The other collectable is a gem which now gives you a jump boost to make the level a bit easier. Please note that it you do not need to use the gem powerup to complete the level, it just makes it quite a bit easier. You can also only have one gem active at once (they last 5 seconds and the player goes cyan when it is active) this means that if you have a powerup active you cannot pickup a second one.
Health System!
Previously when you hit an enemy without hitting them on the head to kill them you would "take damage" this was done by playing a damage animation and you got knocked back a little. There is now a health system in the game so when you hit an enemy all of the things above happen and you get one point of health taken away from you (you get 3 points of health to begin with). This should hopefully put more emphasis on trying not to die because if your health reaches 0 the level will reload (Updated death related things will be in a future update).
Updated Character Movement!
I thought the old character movement was a bit slow and dull so I tweaked around with gravity and player movement speed and also how high you can jump and the game feels much more snappy and fast paced. This also means you cannot jump as high as before (hence why the powerup was added). Again though, the powerups aren't needed to complete the level and are just there to make it a lot easier.
There is a bug at the moment where if you have a powerup active you seem to be able to jump through the walls of the map. This will be fixed is either the next update or the one after that. For now, if you get stuck you need to reload the game.
"Proper" End screen!
Bit misleading. When you reach your home you get taken to the end screen. This is still very far from completion because I want to make it as detailed as possible instead of a boring picture and a few buttons. For now, however, it is the same before but I have added a button in the bottom left to restart the scene so you can play again.
GUI Update!
The current GUI looked very bland and boring. I have now updated the Cherry GUI and added in a Health GUI which in my opinion look much better than it did before with just some black writing.
Known bugs
As I said previously, you can jump through the walls of certain parts of the map when a powerup is active. This is the only known bug so far and will be addressed in the near future.
Thank you for reading the second devlog for this project. The game has enhanced so much already and I am excited to continue working on it!
